Why write amounts in Korean?

On Korean contracts, IOUs, receipts and quotes, the amount is written in words next to the digits to prevent tampering. The usual form is "일금 일백이십삼만사천오백원정 (₩1,234,500)", with 일금 at the start and 정 at the end to mark where the amount stops.

Counting in units of 10,000

Korean groups digits by four: 만 (10⁴), 억 (10⁸), 조 (10¹²). So 1,234,500 is 123만 4,500. Formal Hanja numerals such as 壹, 貳, 參 replace simple characters like 一, 二, 三, which are easy to alter.
